The Artist Exposing the Data We Leave Online (newyorker.com)
totetsu 198 days ago [-]
As someone who is involved in making arts things, and also hacking web things, I have thought of many ways to try and surprise people with their own data. To make a spectacle, and to draw attention to how much we leak information, to be used by who knows who for who knows what. But I settled on the most interesting path being to make a connection with people and share in their information with their agreement. Rather than perusing the predatory urge of the artist or the hacker.

Somehow that makes me think of this exchange, where the AI has been demonstrated to a select group of stakeholders, and believes their happy reactions are representative of everyone it will spy on.

> MORPHEUS: "I was a prototype for Echelon IV. My instructions are to amuse visitors with information about themselves."

JC DENTON: "I don't see anything amusing about spying on people."

> MORPHEUS: "Human beings feel pleasure when they are watched. I have recorded their smiles as I tell them who they are."

> JC DENTON: "Some people just don't understand the dangers of indiscriminate surveillance."

Between this and the artist showcasing the surveillance state via traffic cam selfies, I kinda love the idea of "artists to the rescue".

It seems that this story[1] have made mainstream media. Good job HN!
