Been playing since Civ 1. Reviews here are mostly positive, but some reviewers complain about the lack of some mechanics I hate from Civ 6, like the world council and religious victory content.
Religious victory is the most micromanagey and worst condition to shoot for, and it overlays a totally different zone of control consideration at the worst time - late game - I've never liked it.
World council is .. fine, but always has felt like a win-more mechanic to me. It's not a comeback mechanic, or a place you could commit to to beat out a strong opponent when you're weak in other areas.
Anyway, curious to try it!

I find most win conditions problematic. There's no chance in winning, if you can't defend yourself. So any win condition is always just an additional factor to pure force. Then again, you can cut out competition from important resources, but then you have a strong enemy whose only path to victory is war. And then the question is: why divide energy into two field, when you can just focus on the war machine and get the strongest force.

Sounds like modern Dungeons and Dragons, where the designers reduce challenge and favor "hero" moments.
