5090 is about 30% faster than the 4090. So if a "benchmark" only shows a 2.85% gain, it's a bad benchmark and shouldn't be used.

If you dig into the detailed benchmark numbers[1], both DirectX 9 and DirectX 10 scores are around 10% lower for the 5090 than the 4090, and GPU Compute is a massive 18% lower.
That the driver for the 5090 is immature seems likely, and thus it might leave a lot on the table. Especially the compute deficiency doesn't make much sense to me otherwise.
Like you say the 5090 has more cores and a lot more memory bandwidth, so scores being lower does not seem reasonable outside of driver issues.
