science also moved from a start-up like "director" approach that allowed for result based allocation to great potential candidates by individuals to a "cooperate " process based approach which seems incapable of producing the break through field "fracking" advances humanity yearns for. Which is what humanity.. which depends on these advances rejects.

But not all science is actually producing anything of value. Most universities aren't Harvard. A lot of labs do very obvious, very incremental work. They jump on the bandwagon du jour for grant writing and figure out a way to get the most papers/citation per grad student. Grad students themselves are mostly immigrants, and they are mostly there not for the love of science but because it's a good way to eventually get US work authorization.
